- Vegetation: Open field with dense green grass cover
- Ground Cover: Dense cover of dead grass material, about 20cm thick; very hard to dig through
- Soil Surface: Humic sandy soil, some compaction, slightly moist
- Last Rainfall: Rainfall on Kachana 2004/2005
- Fire: No recent fires
- Biological: 900-1200 stockdays per ha per year (2 to 3 high density treatments)
- Mechanical: None
- Chemical: None
- Bare ground in 1992
Profile description:
- 0-7cm:Dusty sand with humus, held together by dense grass roots; color: grey
- 7-25cm:Sandy humus layer, slightly moist, lots of grass roots; color: dark grey
- 25-50cm:Sand with some humic compounds, slightly moist, some grass roots; color: grey to brown
- 50-67cm:Sand mixed with gravel, moist; color: brown
