There are however, some things we do need to know, if we wish to make it past the information age: - For example the true meaning of a word I began hearing in the early nineties... Finally I overcame the fear of showing my ignorance, and at a land-care meeting I asked for a definition. All I got was a fuzzy-wuzzy answer. That got me intrigued because I saw and heard the word more and more. Now nearly ten years later, this is what I think it means: |
"BIODIVERSITY" is the engine of the living eco-system of Planet Earth. The current model runs on solar power. | ![]() |

BIODIVERSITY = a DIVERSITY of species + a DIVERSITY of genetics and age within each group of the species + the way in which the populations of each species are spread around and the mass or numbers involved |
I believe that any detailed definition of biodiversity can only be meaningful if it is in the context of a particular environment and what we humans expect of that particular environment. In that same context the definition of biodiversity must be related to the long term health of that particular environment. Most people will agree that we find a "DIVERSITY of species" in a zoo. But does that make it a healthy or biodiverse environment? How many of you here will get onto a jet or into a car/bus, if you know, that fuel is leaking and the motor is rattling to bits? |
