Promoting “ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY”

(reading an environment)

If we accept the fact that we do not have a clue as to how many organisms exist on this planet and that each one of these organisms needs AIR, WATER and FOOD, and that each of these organisms wants COMFORT, then we have a good foundation on which to build our environmental literacy.

To actually read what is going on in a particular environment we then begin with four simple questions:

  • ENERGY FLOW: How much sunshine is entering the foodweb?
  • WATER CYCLE: How effective is the use of available water?
  • MINERAL CYCLE: How evenly are existing minerals being cycled?
  • COMMUNITY DYNAMICS: What signs of life can we detect?

The answers to these four simple questions give us the lead we want...

Many of us may need to first learn the meaning of some of the words, but that is simpler than learning the alphabet or learning how to use a computer. It is also a lot more important. (If not to us then at least to our heirs in time and place.)
ENERGY FLOW ?
WATER CYCLE ?
MINERAL CYCLE ?
COMMUNITY DYNAMICS ?

In the long term interest of our fellow humans we may well find a need to learn more than the first four letters of the environmental alphabet.
“WHY ARE WE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY?”

“GIVE A MAN A FISH, FEED HIM FOR A DAY;
TEACH A MAN TO FISH, FEED HIM FOR A LIFE TIME.”

This saying reflects a window of opportunity that closed with the last millennium.

What we believe is: “TEACH HUMANS TO LOOK AFTER THE FISH AND WE MAY FEED NATIONS...”

By promoting Environmental literacy, it is our hope that:
HUMANKIND CAN AND WILL HELP NATURE TO HELP US.
